Univ.-Prof. Oya Beyan, head of the institute
Univ.-Prof. Oya Beyan joined the Medical Faculty of the University of Cologne in May 2021. She is a medical informatician with a computer science background.
After her graduated in Turkey, she worked as postdoctoral researcher in Ireland, Galway, and in 2015 she moved to RWTH Aachen at the i5 Informatics Chair. She also held a postdoctoral researcher position at the Fraunhofer FIT Institute for Applied Informatics. Throughout her career she mostly worked on what we are now used to call ‘medical data science’ and making data ready for processing by AI and Machine Learning tools.
Under her role as Director of the newly established Institute for Biomedical Informatics (BI-K) in Cologne, she aims to increase the significance of inter- and cross-disciplinary research and the promotion of open science practices, while also to integrate social sciences and humanities perspectives in the field.
The aim is to support data-driven medicine with use of ethical and trustworthy machine learning and AI. Curating high-quality data and using this data for better decision-making is the main challenge we take.
Univ.-Prof. Oya Beyan is also co-lead of the MeDIC, the medical data integration centre at the University Hospital of Cologne, with the main aim to curate data to support clinics and researchers.
