We're excited to share the impactful participation of BI-K director Prof. Oya D. Beyan, alongside our engaged PhD students, Oliver Diekmeier and Julia Gehrmann, in the recent "V. Interdisciplinary Congress" held by the Hans Martin Schleyer Stiftung, Heinz Nixdorf Stiftung, and Charité University Medicine in the vibrant city of Berlin!
About the Congress:
Around 100 young researchers, handpicked by esteemed university professors, delved into a crucial dialogue on "Quality and Efficiency: A Contradiction in Terms? - On the future of medical excellence in economically challenging times." The event kicked off with a thought-provoking opening on 28.11., featuring distinguished speakers such as Dr. Horst Nasko, Prof. Heyo K. Kroemer, and Federal Minister of Health Prof. Karl W. Lauterbach. A riveting panel discussion among international and national health sector experts followed, which culminated in a surprising agreement on the necessity of data and analytics for excellence in medical care.
Exploring the Frontiers of AI in Medicine:
On 29.11., Prof. Beyan led a dynamic working group, "AI in Medicine - Balancing Innovation and Risks," where discussions spanned pathology, psychology, nursing, social sciences, and law. Prof. Beyan painted a vivid metaphor, likening the application of AI in Medicine to ascending a rocky staircase to the top of a mountain — a journey we must undertake cautiously to avoid falling of the cliff.
Diverse Perspectives and Insights:
Simultaneously, other working groups delved into app innovation in medicine, the intersection of medical progress and politics, and the intricate relationship between medical progress and society. The congress concluded with a second panel discussion, involving prominent speakers from the German GKV, physician representatives, private hospitals and innovative medtech startups, offering a forward-looking perspective on measures to enhance healthcare in Germany.
Poster Exhibition Spotlight:
Amidst the enriching talks and discussions, our PhD student Julia Gehrmann showcased a compelling poster, illustrating the challenges and opportunities associated with reusing medical real-world data in research. A representation of our commitment to advancing medical informatics! Thank you for representing our BI-K team by sharing some of your exciting research Julia.
As we near BI-K's 3-year anniversary, these impactful engagements underscore our dedication to fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and driving innovation in the ever-evolving landscape of medical informatics. Moving on to 2024, we're looking forward to another year of exciting contributions, energized discussions and collaborative strides in our diverse and welcoming team!
